Meeting Minutes 2/6/08
1) Make OUT not WAR. The amazing ladies (and gentlemen) of Code Pink, a women's group dedicated to the anti-war cause, will be holding a counter-recruitment event in front of the National Guard's office on 13th across the street from Krispy Kreme. It is scheduled for the 14th of February and is an homage to love. Students Against War and SDS will be co-sponsoring the event. So bring your significant others, drums, guitars, and anything else besides weapons and let's cause a scene. Its from 4-6:30 on Valentine's Day.
2) WAR TAPES. SAW will be hosting another movie as part of our "War Tapes" series at the Civic Media Center, across from Bank of America on University. Winter Soldier is a 1972 documentary film chronicling the Winter Soldier Investigation which took place in Detroit, Michigan, from January 31 to February 2, 1971. The film documents the accounts of United States soldiers who returned from Vietnam, and participated in this war crimes hearing.

3) The Winter Soldier Film Screening is part of a larger event in which SAW will be bringing Iraq Veterans Against the War TO UF CAMPUS. We don't have an exact date yet, but FACE and a few other groups on campus have already shown interest in helping us out. The Iraq Veterans, after testifying in front of Congress about the war crimes and violation of international law that they witnessed first hand, will travel to select cities and campuses to discuss what they witnessed with professors and students alike. Concrete information will be posted VERY soon, so keep your eyes open. This will be an amazing event!

Taser Shock Kills Deranged Individual in Vancouver
http://www.talkleft.com/story/2007/11/17/1517/5795
At the end of this video, the man is clearly unconscious and is later pronounced dead. Let me ask you, did his deranged behavior warrant the potentially deadly use of tasers? Could those three officers have detained and rendered him immobile through other, more tactful, more reasonable means? Though this is not an issue that particularly pertains to war, I do believe is pertains to the notion of a police state, excessive use of force, and unfair, unchecked, and asymmetrical structures of power. The effects of this are very clearly potentially fatal.

Meeting Minutes 11/13/07
SAW MEETING MINUTES 11/13/07
Thanks to everyone that came out to the meeting on Tuesday, I think there was a good level of productivity. For those of you who missed it, we talked about several important things coming up that we wanted to get done this semester.
1) Students Making Trade Fair are going up to Fort Benning, Georgia this upcoming Friday for the School of the Americas/Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation. The WHISC is a military training facility that teaches Latin American political operatives in South and Central America. Students Making Trade Fair will be leaving on Friday, staying the night Friday night ($10 to Camp), and coming back Saturday. If you're interested in going you should email Alissa Oldcrow at alissaol@ufl.edu
2) Tuesday after Thanksgiving, we are going to meet on campus somewhere in the evening and begin a massive flyering campaign raising important issues about the ever increasing threat of US Military action against Iran. It would be really amazing if everyone at the meeting and those others of you who are interested in participating in this could make really cool fliers (copies too) that catch eyes. Some ideas are the comparisons between the buildup to the war in Iraq and what is going on now about Iran. Keep checking your messages for the exact time and place, as we have not figured it out. All fliers should have the official SAW logo on them, which will be posted on the website later this week.
3) Our constitution is ready, so next semester we will have money and can start having more events and catching more peoples' attentions.
4) SAW is changing our meeting time and place starting next semester. We will be meeting every second and fourth Wednesday at 6:00pm, more than likely inside a classroom, which we will be assigned when our constitution is approved, so stay posted.
5) Professional Liar and former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is coming to speak at the Phillips Center Monday, November 19th at 8:00pm. Students can get two tickets per ID starting tomorrow, and Thursday the general public can pick up theirs. Unfortunately this will be a very undemocratic speech, seeing as all questions must be submitted by Thursday I believe, will be reviewed by someone who works for Gonzales, and then read by a "moderator" after the speech. So be prepared for some really hard hitting questions suggesting how awesome Gonzales is, but the event will be interesting nonetheless.
6) Give a Funk About War - Start the buzz! We will be having an event next semester with a boatload of great bands. If you have any ideas or know of any bands or that kick ass, please feel free to contact our yahoo email, UFtakingastand@yahoo.com, or otherwise make your ideas heard.
